A Local “History Detective”:  Who was Mary Noyes Rogers?

Upon the discovery in December 2003 of two 1938 Westerly Sun articles on the passing of Mary Noyes Rogers, initial research has culminated into a 10+ year journey of undocumented Westerly and Pawcatuck history.

This talk will focus on the probate records of Ms. Rogers and the many discoveries made along the way including a connection with a major Yale University Art Gallery project. The talk will also highlight the amount of time and “detective” work needed for any research project.

The Babcock-Smith House will be open for tours admission free. The Granite Museum in our Carriage House will also be open with new displays and Joshua’s Store will have wonderful handmade items and more available for purchase. Refreshments served in the Carriage House complements of our Docents.

Stop by to view our new quarry exhibit that encourages children and those who are young-at-heart to set off the detonator and see the “blast.”  And enjoy our new photo exhibit featuring photographs of Wilcox Park and granite buildings in downtown Westerly, with close-ups of amazing details.

Join us for the opening event of the Babcock-Smith House Museum's exciting upcoming exhibit of Victorian lingerie. This formal tea party in the Carriage House will feature Patricia Perry, the popular historical interpreter (you may remember her from our Doll Teas), as well as the usual delicious fare prepared by the Museum's docents. The Sinking of the U-853

Captain Bill Palmer and Greg Pettys produced a documentary on the U-853.  This is the U-boat sunk on the last day of WW II off Block Island.  They will discuss the documentary and the book Bill has published.

Susan Jerome, our ever-popular “textilian,” will discuss and illustrate the role of samplers.  Although attendees are welcome to bring one sampler to this event, they may bring multiple samplers to our upcoming Sampler Documentation Day event being held on October 1, 2016.
