Children's Program: Sampling History's Mysteries Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 10:00-12:00 pm Presented by South County Sampler Initiative Come learn how objects such as schoolgirl samplers can be used to understand the lives of young children long ago. Hands-on activities will include making a bookmark with cross-stitched initials and solving the mystery of Clarissa. Program is offered as part of the South County Sampler Initiative funded by the RI Council for the Humanities. Program designed for children in K-6 but all are welcome. At the Carriage House. This Needlework of Mine: Historic Samplers of Rhode Island Sunday, June 4 at 2:00-3:30 pm Presented by South County Sampler Initiative Last fall people brought in samplers to be documented as part of the South County Sampler Initiative. This program will share the findings of that documentation and explore the history of schoolgirl samplers. Samplers from the Museum will be on display and audience members are invited to bring their own samplers. This program is offered as part of the South County Sampler Initiative funded by the Ri Council fo the Humanities. At the Carriage House. Program is free to all. |

Downtown Granite Gems: A Walking Tour of Westerly Thursday, July 13 at 6:30 pm. Rain date July 20. The tour will include a variety of buildings and monuments which demonstrate the importance which Westerly granite played in Westerly's downtown history. Meet on park esplanade at 6:30. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring fluids if hot. Tour will last about an hour. Non-yet-members $5.00; members free. |

Don't Leave Home Without It... Ongoing exhibit beginning July 18 That's the whimsical title of a new exhibit in the Isaac G. Smith Jr. Room featuring items such as handbags, parasols, shoes, bonnets, and jewelry from the Museum's Collection. This new exhibit is included with the normal tour of the 1734 Colonial Mansion and the Westerly Granite Industry Museum. Tours are free for Museum members and $5.00 for non-members. |

This tour is an introduction to the various types of monuments in River Bend cemetery with the emphasis on those of Westerly granite. Later tours will focus on other specific subjects. Monumental Genius: James Batterson & the Transformation of Art & Industry in Victorian America Sunday, September 10, at 2:00 pm Presented by William Hosley This program will focus on the well-connected James Batterson of the New England Granite Company, who was responsible for building impressive buildings and monuments made from Westerly Granite. He parlayed his political connections into commissions for the most important war memorials and monuments in the country, including the signature monuments at the national cemeteries at Gettysburg and Antietam. The Battle of Stalingrad Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 2pm Presented by Anastasia Goodman (aka Harriet Grayson), author Anastasia Goodman discusses the Battle of Stalingrad through readings from her Sasha Perlov mystery series ("Loose Ends" & "Death and Diamonds") with a discussion of hte actual epic battle. "It was one of the most significant battles of the 20th century. Historians consider it the turning point in WW II. Sasha, a Russion-born police detective, speaks to survivors of the battle in the mystery series (anastasiagoodman.weebly.com). His grandfather was the Hero of the Battle of Stalingrad. Learn about this monumental military event through literature and a discussion that describes how the two great powers -- Nazi Germany and the Russian Red Army -- face off in the midst of frightened civilians caught in the cross fire." Holiday Open House Saturday, December 2, 2017 10:00 am - 2:00 pm The 1734 mansion house, decorated for the holiday, and the Westerly Granite Museum will be open to the public at no charge. Free refreshments will be available. Fresh holiday sprays and cookie platters will be offered for sale, and the museum store is stocked with handmade holiday items. There will also be a raffle of holiday baskets and local merchant gift certificates. |
